During the Seafood Expo Global, which took place last week in Barcelona, the Urk fish sector was strongly represented. As many as 25 Urker companies were present as exhibitors and also many Urker companies were present as visitors. It is estimated that between 400 and 500 locals had traveled to the Catalan capital.
On Tuesday evening, the NBSO (Netherlands Business Support Office) Barcelona, together with the Honorary Consul Martijn Huisman organized a dinner for Urk and Spanish guests. LVVN attache Machiel Kommers addressed the invitees on behalf of the embassy and also mentioned that the embassy, together with Urk Seafood, governments, and education, will work towards an event during Conxemar in Vigo, later this year.
On Wednesday, Urk Seafood organized a well-attended networking breakfast, which was also attended by many international relations. With as many as 140 guests from 7 countries, the event provided a great opportunity to highlight the powerful position Urk occupies within the fish industry. Rein Brands of Urk Seafood: “We really didn’t expect this turnout, especially since this was the first time we organized this, but we will definitely repeat this at the next edition of the Barcelona Seafood Expo!”. The Urk Seafood program will continue to expand. “Hopefully after this successful week more companies will join our ambitious Seafood cluster.”
Alderman Middelkoop expressed his pride in the developments within the Urk Seafood cluster: “In just a few years, Urk Seafood has become a well-known player in the seafood world. We really see the added value of working together to put Urk and our seafood business on the international map. The cluster also generates a lot of interest in diplomatic contacts.
