Our member Seafood Connection will continue under the name Umios next year. The name change follows the repositioning of Japanese parent company Maruha Nichiro Corporation, active worldwide in the fish and seafood sector.
Seafood Connection is thirty years old and has grown to become Urk’s largest fish trading company, with branches in Europe and Asia. The company is wholly owned by Maruha Nichiro. Founder Jan Kaptijn is involved in international management as executive officer and responsible for operations in Europe and Africa.
Recently acquired associates, including Van der Lee Seafish in Urk and Inlet Seafish in Spain, continue to operate under their own names for the time being.
The name Umios is composed of Umi (Japanese for ocean), One and Solutions and emphasizes international cooperation within the group. The name change will take effect as of April 2026. Later that year, the Urk headquarters will move to a new office on Urkervaart, next to Seacon Production.
