Urk-Seafood member Kramers’ Seafood, has new owners with the transfer of all shares to the next generation. On Dec. 20, 2024, Lub (66) and Klaas Kramer (65) transferred their shares to son Hein, daughter Gertine, and nephew Hein, respectively. This puts the family business, which has been led by the Kramer brothers since 1993, fully in the hands of the third generation.
From filleting to innovation
Since its founding, Kramers’ Seafood has grown into an international player with a wide range of products and markets. Where the company once started with flatfish filleting, the focus today is on innovative and demand-oriented production. Thanks to investments in modern technology, such as a 20-meter LOVET air fryer, Kramers’ Seafood now produces pre-fried, breaded products with 70% less fat and all-natural flavor retention.
Hein Kramer (general manager): “Our transition from a traditional filleting company to a leading supplier of customized products was essential to remain future-proof. We are focusing on foodservice and product innovation, while complementing our North Sea fish business with global sourcing.”
Growth strategy and technology
The new generation is betting heavily on automation, robotization and digitization. According to Hein Kramer, this approach offers opportunities to make production processes more efficient and reliable, with more focus on data-driven control. The company has greatly expanded its production capacity in recent years and now processes fish for export to 27 countries.
With 220 employees and a wide range of products, Kramers’ Seafood is distinguished by a focus on quality, customization and sustainable production methods. “We still see a lot of potential in our production lines and continue to work on innovation and efficiency,” Hein said.
Confidence in the future
Lub and Klaas Kramer will remain involved with the company for the time being to share their experience. “It feels good to pass the baton to the new generation,” says Klaas. “We have confidence in their vision and approach to continue to grow Kramers’ Seafood.”
Kramers’ Seafood remains an example of how a family business can adapt to changing market conditions while maintaining its roots and values.
