Spike in pangasius sales

Why is pangasius about to replace cod in your fish stick, and more importantly – what is it? Matthew Wilcox spoke with Frans William Zeeman of Seafood Connection to find out.

The spike in pangasius sales in Europe is part of efforts to “keep fish on the shelves,” says Maruha Nichiro’s Seafood Connection. Retailers that had previously eliminated pangasius from their lineups are now reintroducing it as stocks of whitefish dry up.
European retailers are rushing to secure alternatives as whitefish supply chains struggle to adapt to the ongoing fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We see major retailers in Europe rapidly increasing their volumes of pangasius products,” Frans Zeeman, chief product officer at seafood importer Seafood Connection, told IntraFish.
In October, Nomad Foods announced that it had signed new contracts to secure supplies of Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)-certified pangasius from Vinh Hoan, VDTG and Godaco Seafood, three of the world’s largest suppliers.
